Lesson Policies

OVERVIEW

Private lessons in piano, French horn and voice are available for beginners through early advanced students from third grade to adult. The 40-minute lesson is recommended for all students. 30-minute lessons are available for children aged 10 and under. 60-minute lessons are available for late intermediate and early advanced students.

FIRST LESSON/CONSULTATION

An initial consultation is provided free of charge, prior to the first lesson. If possible, bring a prepared piece, excerpt, or etude to perform. If you do not have anything prepared, Mr. Roberts will assess your range and sight-reading ability if applicable.

OTHER PERSONS PRESENT AT LESSONS

One parent, sibling, or other relative is always welcome during each lesson. Additional persons present may be considered on a case-by-case basis, as the potential for increased conversation is distracting and devalues the time set aside for learning. If you arrive prior to your lesson time, you may come on in and wait quietly until it is time for your lesson to begin.

ATTENDANCE POLICY/PAYMENT

Your lessons begin and end at the times agreed upon beforehand. If you are late to a lesson, you will miss out on valuable time that you have already been charged for. Monthly tuition is due in advance on the 7th day of the month or by the date of the first lesson, whichever is later. Any payment not received by the 10th of the month or within three days of the month’s first lesson will be subject to a $10 late fee. Lessons cancelled more than 24 hours in advance will be credited toward the next month. Only one free makeup lesson per semester will be provided for any lesson cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.

REQUIRED BOOKS/MATERIALS

Piano, horn and voice lessons provide the basics of classical music training but with fundamentals of technique that can be applied to a variety of styles. No one set of books will be required for all students. Students will typically bring several books to each lesson. This may include curriculum in music theory, depending on the student's needs. In addition to the recommendations below, most students will benefit from learning two to four solo pieces each semester. All music is to be purchased by the student through local music stores, online vendors or other outlets. Edmond Music has a great selection of sheet music. Larsen Music and Palen Music have good selections of horns that will meet the needs of most students.

PIANO:  Piano students will typically start with an Alfred or Bastien lesson book but will also soon need Fingerpower or a technic book, a theory book or notespeller, and an additional repertoire book. Faber books are also very popular at early levels.

FRENCH HORN:  Beginning horn students may start with Essential Technique or other materials used in the schools but will eventually need a low horn book, such as the Bordogni: 24 Legato Studies for Trombone, and also an etude book such as Maxime-Alphonse. Etudes are the foundation of study for advancing horn students.

VOICE:  Beginning voice students typically start with Sing Legato by Kenneth Jennings. Various collections of folk songs and Romantic literatue may be studied alongside vocalises by Sieber or Lütgen. Advancing students may sing in Italian and common languages such as French or German, but students wanting more than a cursory look into other languages will be referred to another teacher.

ALL STUDENTS WILL NEED A METRONOME.

French horn students will also need a tuner.

LOCATION: Lessons are provided in home, off 15th Street in Edmond between Coltrane and I-35, in one of the neighborhoods behind Sam's and Walmart.
