I offer beginning, intermediate and early advanced lessons in piano for children ages 8 and up to adults, as well as French horn and voice lessons for students ages 11 and up. What sets me apart from other teachers is my understanding of the role of piano as a secondary instrument. It was my experience participating in piano lessons and children’s choirs from age four that laid the foundation for success with other instruments later down the road. Understanding that we all have different paces and goals, this discipline will help you to develop other routines that you can stick with at school, in the workplace, and wherever your future takes you.

My goal is to provide all students with a general understanding of music theory and musicianship skills while also enabling them to perform music they enjoy at a level that fuels confidence. For most students, music lessons may be one of many hobbies that they pursue, but piano and horn students in this studio will also come out well-prepared to pursue additional music education at the college level or beyond, should they choose to do so. Students in this studio will learn note reading, basic music theory, and skills for interpretation and expression in addition to development of their physical technique and posture.

The key component of my teaching philosophy is in helping students learn how to practice. The technique for any musical instrument should not be physically uncomfortable or difficult to master, but it does take strategic practice. It requires time management in learning what measures and techniques to focus on during a specific practice session and what concepts should be saved for another day. A beginning student in this studio should expect to spend at least 25 minutes four days per week or 20 minutes five days per week with his or her instrument. Although practicing every day may be tempting for some, I believe that rest and recharge with other activities one or two days per week is also a good thing.

Regardless of whether you come to me in order to learn the piano, the French horn, or the voice, this endeavor that we take together can sharpen your mind and your emotional well-being as well as your physical health. I hope that through this discipline, you come to find your instrument as an extension of your body, your soul, and your spirit.
